Lifelong Member Recognised with Union Award
One of NFU Scotland’s longest serving members, George Murray was named today (11 February) as the winner of the NFU Scotland Miskelly Award 2013 at the Union’s Centenary AGM in St. Andrews.
Mr Murray (92), from Morvich Farm near Rogart in Sutherland, has been a member of NFU Scotland for 70 years. He has represented his area on hill farming matters and been branch chairman for many years.
Mr Murray remains very active, has never missed the annual North Country Cheviot lamb sale at Lairg since the mid-1930’s and still attends the weekly livestock sale at his local Dingwall mart.
NFU Scotland’s President, Nigel Miller, took great personal delight in presenting the award to Mr Murray as his first ever farm placement as a young vet saw him regularly visit with Mr Murray and his family.
Presenting the award, Mr Miller said:
“Throughout all his life, George has retained an extraordinary enthusiasm for the industry that to this day sees him regularly attend Union meetings, local sales and farming events.
“His love of hill farming, and support for crofting in his area, is not restricted to the day-to-day issues but extends into the big picture issues that affect an industry that he loves. But he has also shown commitment to the wider rural community and was a member of Sutherland community council for many years.
“In his own farming business, he has always strived to push the boundaries on his farm and improve performance despite the tough uncompromising location of his farm and his love for the North Country Cheviot breed has been at the heart of that.
“His drive and enthusiasm for farming is undiminished and, in our Centenary year, George and his family encapsulate so much of what is good about Scottish farming and the families at its heart.”
