Dumfries & Galloway
The Dumfries and Galloway region, contains less than 8% of Scotland agricultural area but we have 14% of the national cattle herd, 9% of the sheep and poultry flocks and 10% of the pig herd. We also can grow a range of crops. Another thing we have is water (rainfall) and that is what allows us to be such a powerhouse of food production.
A long narrow county can be a challenge for regional activity however nearly 900 members are divided across four individual branches; Wigtown, Stewartry, Dumfries and Langholm each with a dedicated Group Secretary and who hold their own, local, activity. We are also lucky to have several members who are willing to step forward and give up their time to help represent the regions on commodity issues such as milk, LFA, Livestock etc. Members will be sent details of who their local representatives are each year following the regional AGM.
As well as in person meetings, we have members only branch Whatsapp Groups which started during covid to allow the sharing of information and our
D&G Regional Facebook page is kept up to date with regional events and relevant information. Please also make sure that your contact details are up to date so that you get all our text, email and postal communications. We also have a Family membership which allows you to add family members (who do not have their own farming business) at no additional cost.
As your Regional Manager, I endeavour to work with our Regional Chair Stewart Wyllie, the group secretaries, elected members, and wider team from NFUS to be a strong voice for Scottish Agriculture in the region as well as nationally. Your support is appreciated but also required because we must go forward together. Please get involved, come to meetings, and tell us your thoughts. We are hugely appreciative of your input but we can only represent you if we hear from you. Whatever challenges you face, please get in touch; we are always on hand to help you, no matter how big or small your query may be.
