East Central

Kate Maitland

East Central is a diverse and dynamic region, representing a broad mix of agricultural sectors across Scotland. With a membership of over 1,000, stretching from Dalwhinnie to the Firth of the Forth, and from the coast to Aberfeldy and Braco, it reflects the strength and variety of Scottish agriculture.

As your Regional Manager for East Central, I will continue my work locally with regional representatives, including Robert Bell, Regional Chair, Group Secretaries and NFUS staff, as well as presidential office bearers - and of course, supporting you, our members, as much as I can.

We cannot underestimate the challenges facing the region. It’s been another extraordinary year for Scottish agriculture. We’ve faced a perfect storm of pressures – soaring costs, unpredictable weather, and an ever-changing policy landscape. Yet through it all, Scotland’s farmers and crofters have shown the same grit, skill, and determination that have carried our industry through every challenge in its proud history.

We have fought hard against the damaging Inheritance Tax reforms and worked to shape legislation and regulation through Parliament. Throughout this, NFU Scotland has been the strong, united voice that Scottish agriculture needs. We’ve made sure government understands that profitability and food production must sit at the heart of future policy – not as an afterthought but as the foundation on which climate action, nature enhancement, and rural renewal all depend.

The job as Regional Manager is highly varied, and no two days are the same - from dealing with members’ queries that affect their businesses to organising regional events, many of which have been held online.  Meetings remain as flexible as possible, enabling NFUS to reach as diverse a range of members as possible.

Communication is key, so if you haven’t submitted your email and mobile number to us, please do.  We operate a family and SAYFC membership, if you wish to find out more, please get in touch.

Your support is very much appreciated and without it we wouldn’t be able to be a strong voice for Scottish agriculture.  If you are faced with a farming challenge, whatever it might be, please get in touch; we are always on hand to help you, no matter how big or small your query may be.
