Policy Manager/Senior Policy Manager – Crops


Job Summary

Representing some 8,500 farmers, crofters, and other rural businesses across the country, NFU Scotland’s mission is to promote and protect the interests of its members by influencing government and the supply chain to secure a sustainable future for Scottish agriculture.  We are recruiting for a person to join our widely respected Policy Team to take the lead all issues relating to crop production – including combinable crops and specialist crops. 

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience of crop production systems and issues that affect the arable sector.  You must have the ability to work alongside colleagues on key issues across agriculture sectors, advising on appropriate policy lines, providing technical guidance, and taking the lead on projects and initiatives.   You need to be comfortable dealing with several different issues at one time and be able to articulate them clearly and in a convincing manner to a wide variety of audiences.   We want someone with a can-do attitude.   What we do makes a big difference to farm businesses across Scotland, so we need someone who thrives on challenges and is solutions focussed.


Some selected aspects of the role

1. Formally and informally influence the development and delivery of all aspects of agricultural policy and regulation that relate to crops and arable interests in Scotland. 

2. Influence the supply chain associated with all the mainstream crop types of interest to arable and specialist crop production in Scotland.

3. Provide specialist and timely support and advice to elected representatives, head office-based colleagues, regionally based colleagues and members of NFU Scotland. 

4. Provide concise written materials with regard to consultations and briefings for a variety of related purposes as necessary.


Key requirements

1 First Class or 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant discipline and/or relevant working experience.

2. At least five years’ experience working on issues related to policy development -preferably in the context of crop production and/or policy development. 

3. The ability to find solutions to problems and mediate conflict.

4. A self-starter and a strong team player and with the confidence and experience to mentor younger team members.

5. The skills to interpret detailed and complex information and present it clearly and concisely to different audiences and suggest pragmatic and credible courses of action.

6. Capable of dealing with different demands at one time while clearly prioritising to ensure outcomes are achieved.

7. A positive and reassuring manner with an ability to deliver challenging messages effectively.

8. Confidence in speaking to a variety of audiences, including colleagues, members, officials and the media, including radio and TV interviews when required. 


What’s on offer:

• Salary £40-£45K commensurate with demonstrable knowledge and competence

• This is a permanent contract and is full time

• 38 holiday entitlement per annum (including Bank Holidays)

You will be based in NFU Scotland’s Head Office in Ingliston (near Edinburgh Airport), with regular travel throughout Scotland and the UK and occasionally beyond.  Under current guidelines, you would be working from home and flexible working arrangements can be agreed.

The Role

We are looking for new Agents to join our Kirkwall Agency and our Keith & Turriff Agency. To ensure the Agencies flourishes you will need to ensure a first rate customer service. As an Agent, you’ll be your own boss, running an agency under NFU Mutual's name, selling our award-winning products and services. You’ll have the freedom to develop plans and strategies, recruit and develop a team and expand your ambitions. It’s a chance to grow a business with a full range of customers, from farmers to homeowners, commercial businesses to car owners.

Job Specification

This means you’ll need a combination of personal and professional qualities. You’ll be an excellent communicator, great with people from a wide range of backgrounds, with the ability to spot a sales opportunity and develop new business. You’ll be commercially sharp and open to innovations to continually improve your agency.

As well as being a strong and influential business leader, you’ll also be an inspirational and motivational manager to your team. Collaborative, positive and supportive, you’ll give them opportunities to develop their talents, while making sure they work to all relevant regulations and standards of compliance.

You’ll also play a major role in the farming community as your area’s NFU Scotland Group Secretary. NFU Scotland represent the voice of agriculture up to the highest levels. You’ll play a major role in this, championing local farmers’ interests, arranging local meetings and events, recruiting and retaining members and keeping them up-to-date on union policy. This will put you at the heart of the local rural community, giving you the chance to make the most of new business opportunities for your Agency. With full backing from the union, you’ll have access to expert advice and specialist support on everything from policy and increasing membership to marketing and media.
You’ll be joining an established business, so won’t need to make any up-front capital investment and as a self-employed Agent, your income will be incorporated within the business financials. As well as investment support, we’ll give you access to a full range of courses at our dedicated Training Academy, such as sales, business and finance planning, team recruitment and NFU Mutual products. We’ll also support you in gaining Chartered Institute of Insurers certification.

Future Agent Programme - Scotland

The Role

We’re launching an exciting fast-track Future Agent Programme throughout the UK to provide the training, support and development you need to become an NFU Mutual Agent and farming representative. During the 12-month programme you will be employed by NFU Mutual / the relevant farming union and gain the necessary skills and experience to run your own NFU Mutual Agency business, along with a professional insurance qualification. Towards the end of the programme you’ll be able to apply to become a self-employed Agent, where you’ll develop strong relationships and business links with our members, selling NFU Mutual and the relevant farming union’s products and services.

With previous experience of sales you need to be highly motivated, with a desire to be your own boss by managing and leading a successful team. You’ll be an excellent communicator, have a flair for figures and a passion to grow and develop a business. You’ll have the ability to form excellent relationships with our customers and colleagues and be acceptable to relocation.

Initially you will be based in one of the following locations, however there is a requirement to be able to relocate to other areas of the UK, enabling you to successfully complete the 12 programme.
