Rural Business Policy Manager

More than 80 per cent of Scotland's land area is agricultural land.  There is a growing number of policies and greater levels of legislation in place governing how farmers and crofters can manage this land.  We are looking for a professional, persuasive and engaging individual to represent our members on a wide variety of subjects including species management issues, rural planning, utilities, forestry, residential property and farm business infrastructure.

In this fantastic role, you will be responsible for leading the development of evidence-based policy positions and developing strategies to advocate and influence decision makers to help achieve NFUS’s policy goals and support our farmers and crofters.  You will work closely with colleagues to ensure our organisational positions and policy goals are well evidenced, robust and influential.

Representing 8,500 farmers, crofters and other rural businesses across the country, you will support NFU Scotland in our mission to promote and protect the interests of our members by influencing government, stakeholders and the supply chain to secure a sustainable and profitable future for Scottish agriculture.

What’s on offer:

  • Salary commensurate with competence, £22K - £27K per annum
  • This is a permanent contract and full or part time will be considered
  • 38 holiday entitlement (this includes Bank Holidays)
  • Generous contributed pension
  • Free onsite parking

You will be based in NFUS Scotland Head Office in Ingliston (near Edinburgh Airport), with regular travel throughout Scotland and the UK and occasionally beyond.

To apply: Please send your CV with a covering letter and details of your current remuneration package to Alison McLean at recruitment@nfus.org.uk. The closing date for applications is Monday 26 August 2019.  A full job description is available on request.

Climate Change Policy Manager

How Scotland's farmland is used and managed is a huge part of the solution to climate change.  We need the right policies in place to address the climate change challenge and allow Scotland’s farms and crofts to keep producing food and delivering for the environment and rural economy.  We are recruiting a person to join our widely respected Policy Team to take the lead on climate change issues.

The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge of climate change policy in Scotland and across the UK.  Good communication skills and an understanding of the importance of communications and campaigns in supporting policy advocacy are essential.  If you have strong organisation skills, are enthusiastic and persuasive and enjoy working as part of a team, we'd like to hear from you.

NFU Scotland Group Secretary / Insurance Sales Agent - Dumfries

About NFU Mutual and our agency network

As a successful, growing insurance and financial services company with an award-winning range of products and services, we serve a range of customers, from individual policyholders to major businesses. We’re a mutual, which means our customers are also our members and we develop long-standing relationships with them, based on exceptional personal service and honest advice. This means we really know our market and retain 95% of business each year. As one of our Agents, you’ll be able to run and develop your business from a position of real strength.

Our Dumfries Agency has an exciting opportunity for a third Agent to join the team. The office is currently located in the town centre and offers an attractive mix of commerical and agricultural business. With a key focus on building relationships as well as a highly supportive, loyal and active NFU Scotland branch in the agricultural market, you’ll find plenty of potential to increase sales.

Your opportunity as an NFU Mutual Agent & NFU Scotland Group Secretary

We’re looking for business leaders, rather than insurance specialists, although knowledge of insurance or finance would be useful. As an Agent, you’ll be your own boss, running an agency under NFU Mutual's name, selling our award-winning products and services. You’ll have the freedom to develop plans and strategies, recruit a team and expand your ambitions. It’s a chance to use your entrepreneurial flair to grow a business with a full range of customers, from farmers to homeowners, commercial businesses to car owners.

This means you’ll need a combination of personal and professional qualities. You’ll be an excellent communicator, great with people from a wide range of backgrounds, with the ability to spot a sales opportunity and develop new business. With an entrepreneurial attitude and a clear vision, you’ll be commercially sharp and open to innovations to continually improve your agency.

As well as being a strong and influential business leader, you’ll also be an inspirational and motivational manager to your team. Collaborative, positive and supportive, you’ll give them opportunities to develop their talents, while making sure they work to all relevant regulations and standards of compliance.

You’ll also play a major role in the farming community as your area’s NFU Scotland's Group Secretary. NFU Scotland represent the voice of agriculture up to the highest levels. You’ll play a major role in this, championing local farmers’ interests, arranging local meetings and events, recruiting and retaining members and keeping them up-to-date on union policy. This will put you at the heart of the local rural community, giving you the chance to make the most of new business opportunities for your agency. With full backing from the union, you’ll have access to expert advice and specialist support on everything from policy and increasing membership to marketing and media.

Rewards and benefits

You’ll be taking over an established business, so won’t need to make any up-front capital investment and as a self-employed Agent, your income will be incorporated within the business financials. You’ll have the freedom to grow your business; to recruit, reward and develop your staff; and to lead with the autonomy of an entrepreneur, all with the backing of a major organisation. As well as investment support, we’ll give you access to a full range of courses at our dedicated Training Academy, such as sales, business and finance planning, team recruitment and NFU Mutual products. We’ll also support you in gaining Chartered Institute of Insurers certification.

On target earnings for the first year up to £40k.

Is being an NFU Mutual Agent right for you?
Before you register your interest in becoming an Agent with NFU Mutual, please ask yourself the following questions.

  • Do you have knowledge of the farming industry and experience of dealing with rural communities?
  • Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit?
  • Can you balance the need to grow a sales business while managing a team?
  • Do you have a passion for customer service?
  • Do you enjoy interacting with people, building networks and playing an active role in the community?

If the answers to these are yes, then we are looking forward to hearing from you.
