This year we expect to see Scottish cattle movement recording move from BCMS CTS Online to ScotEID, with the hope that the change will be seamless, and result in a single provider of the movement systems for official business to business cattle movements as well as ScotMoves.

This Christmas – as with just about every Christmas before -  farmers, crofters and growers are likely to be at home and still be hard at work writes NFU Scotland’s Food Chains Policy Manager John Armour Even I will be milking cows and feeding calves at my parents farm on Christmas day.  While we have the tradition of harvest thanksgiving in our rural communities in Scotland, it doesn’t cut through society in the same way that Thanksgiving does in the United States of America (USA).

Last Monday I was watching the One Show on BBC One when presenter Matt Baker made a passionate plea that we, as a nation, should value milk more than we do. He stated that milk should not be cheaper than water.Of course Matt Baker is from a farming family, and as a past chairman of the English & Welsh Young Farmers, he knows the impact that the downturn in commodity markets is having on many hard working farming families across the UK.

John Armour

John is responsible for NFU Scotland’s livestock Policy. Serving the needs of the NFU Scotland Livestock Committee he works to ensure that the objectives of the Union are delivered in order to support beef and sheep farmers in Scotland. After growing up on a dairy farm John studied International Politics at University and went on to join the NFU Scotland Policy Team in 2014. He has previously worked on both food and milk policy within the Union.
