NFUS Brands Supermarket Claims of “Squeezed Margins” as Laughable

NFU Scotland has echoed the comments from the Ulster Farmers Union, its sister organisation in Northern Ireland, in rubbishing the report from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) on food inflation.  The report infers that cattle prices in the UK have risen by 17% year on year and claims that “retailers’ margins continue to be squeezed”.

Pack Principles Right; Open Minds Needed on Delivery

NFU Scotland has backed the main principles behind the Final Report of Brian Pack’s Inquiry into Future Support for Agriculture in Scotland, published today (Wednesday, 3 November).  However, it has urged that minds remain open on delivery options.   The Union says that the main negotiating lines for the Scottish Government and industry are close to being established, but how they translate into future schemes on the ground is still unknown and all options need to remain on the table.

Union Attacks Commission Over Mercosur Talks

NFU Scotland has cranked up its opposition to ongoing trade talks between Europe and Mercosur.   In its latest letter to the European Trade Commissioner, the Union laid out five areas around animal health, human health and food safety where guarantees must be secured before any additional access for imported products from these countries is agreed.

UK Close to BTV Eradication, But Only with Import Care

Scotland’s leading livestock organisations have reacted positively to the news that the number of reported cases in Europe of the devastating livestock disease, Bluetongue (BTV) are in marked decline.   With continued vigilance, disease-free status for Scotland and the rest of GB is realistic while eradication of the disease in Europe is a distinct possibility.

NFU Scotland is to hold a series of meetings around Scotland to explain the ongoing changes to the current Less Favoured Areas Support Scheme (LFASS) and also discuss with farmers the future of LFA, particularly in light of ongoing discussions around reform of the CAP.

Energy Minister and BBC Journalist to Chair Farmer-Focused Renewables Conference – Last Chance to Book

Land managers will have a unique opportunity to find out more about collaborative approaches to developing on-farm renewables projects at a free conference taking place in Argyll in November. Union Committee Hits Out at Possible LFA Funding Shift

NFU Scotland’s Less Favoured Areas Committee has hit out at suggestions that the delivery of an important stream of European funding that is crucial to many of Scotland’s farmers and crofters could be altered as a consequence of forthcoming CAP Reform discussions.
