Elaine Scoops Miskelly Award for Services to NFU Scotland

Top North East secretary Elaine Robertson has received one of the Union’s highest accolades – the John Miskelly Memorial Award.

Since joining the Union in 1987, Elaine Robertson, has gone above and beyond her job description, and received the Miskelly Award at the Union’s AGM on 9 February at the Fairmont Hotel, St Andrews.

Last year’s winner of the award, which is in its ninth year, was Liz Murdoch from NFU Scotland’s Laurenckirk and Stonehaven offices.

At the age of 17, Elaine left school and a short time later began working with Alan Meldrum in the Keith office for NFU Scotland. Around five years later she took on the role of agent, after the office was expanded to a two-person agency, working with Eddie Moir. In 2012, Elaine received a long-service award for 20 years with NFU Scotland.

Jo Durno, a friend of Elaine’s for many years, and who has also received the award previously commented: “Elaine’s skill for the job was obvious when she started. Following her appointment as an agent she was seconded to work for the Moray and Nairn office, at the same time, fulfilling both roles. As well as making a lot of good friends in that region, she left a lasting impression.

“Elaine gets on very well with farmers, and everyone has a lot of respect for her in both areas.

“I’ve known Elaine for many years, and throughout that time she has boasted excellent organisational skills, dedicating her time and energy to going above and beyond what is expected in her role. We routinely have quarterly meetings, and others as and when required – more than most areas, as Elaine is always keen to get views on consultations and such like.

“She can often be seen in the office early in the morning out with normal hours. We have a very active branch as a result of all her hard work, and this has been extended with representation at local shows. Ensuring a strong representation at Keith Show in particular is something Elaine is proud of, and every year she goes that extra mile. On many an occasion she has won the award for the best trade stand.

“Her talents extend beyond that, and she is an accomplished craftsperson. Many of her creations can often be seen at Keith Show.

“Elaine comes from a farming background, her father was a dairy farmers in Keith and she certainly knows her way around the farm, being called in to help out when she was needed.

“One of the more recent projects Elaine has been involved with was the Banffshire Centenary Blend Whisky for NFU Scotland’s Centenary in 2013/14. As well as being on the organising committee for this, Elaine, along with others, gave up her time to go round the distilleries to collect the samples and promoting the whisky, helping to raise more than £21,000 for the Trust.

“Elaine is dedicated 100 per cent to her work, and in anything she gets involved with. She is totally committed to anything she takes on, nothing is half hearted.”
