Forfar Pair Win Recruitment Honour for Second Time

The Membership Flame – an NFU Scotland award that recognises outstanding efforts in recruitment and retention of members - has gone to the Forfar secretaries Rob Beaty and Jeremy Parker for the second time.

This young duo, who first won the Flame award in 2013, continue to show drive, enthusiasm and verve in re-energising their local Angus branch.

In 2014, they recruited 19 new members to the Angus branch, retained 96 percent of their existing members and brought in subscription income that was eight percent above the branch’s target for the year.  A tremendous achievement.

The Union’s unique local secretary network – which works on behalf of both NFU Scotland and NFU Mutual - continues to provide an excellent service to members.  It also generates great loyalty amongst those providing that service.

Last month, Oban-based Group Secretary Euan Warnock recorded 20 years with NFUS and in March, Islay Secretary Gill Johnstone will also have been serving island members for 20 years.  Lanark secretary Nicky Brown will reach the 20-year landmark in May 2015 and, in December, Mary Fisher in the Bearsden office will have been with the Union 30 years.

In 2014, long-serving secretaries Liz Murdoch in Laurencekirk (29 years); Tom Sayles in Thurso (15 years) and Roy Hughes in Ayr (45 years’ service with NFUS and NFU Mutual) stepped down.  Liz won the NFU Scotland Miskelly award for her work in 2014.

This year, the Union also added five new names to its Group Secretary network - Sally Heggie (Dumfries); Tommy Fraser (Thurso); Angie Smith (Dingwall); Ross Silvers (Inverurie); Andrew White (Ayr) and Gill Carnegie (Laurencekirk).

Speaking at the AGM, Scott Walker said:
“This year, the Membership Flame goes to back to the dynamic duo of Rob Beaty and Jeremy Parker in the Forfar office, a pair who continue to make their mark in driving forward the work of the Union in Angus.

“NFU Scotland generates huge levels of loyalty, not just amongst members but staff as well.  Between them, Roy in Ayr; Tom in Thurso; Liz in Laurencekirk; Euan in Oban; Gill on Islay; Nicky in Lanark and Mary in Bearsden have clocked up an astonishing 180 years of service to our members, working on behalf of ourselves and NFU Mutual.

“And it is reassuring that the new generation of group secretaries are just as enthusiastic and committed to the Union as the old guard.”
