NFU Scotland Calls on Labour Party to Deliver on its ‘Food Security is National Security’ Pledge

Agricultural budget dominates discussions at Labour Party Conference

NFU Scotland spent two days of intensive lobbying activity at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool where the need for the UK Government to deliver an increased, ring-fenced multi-annual agricultural budget in October dominated discussions.

NFU Scotland met with new Ministers, MPs and MSPs to raise the issue of future funding in advance of the Budget on 30 October.

Over two days at the Conference (Sunday 22 September and Monday 23 September), the NFU Scotland team of President Martin Kennedy, Director of Policy Jonnie Hall and Political Affairs Manager Beatrice Morrice met with more than 20 politicians including DEFRA Secretary of State Steve Reed MP; Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs Daniel Zeichner MP; Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray MP and Leader of Scottish Labour Anas Sarwar MSP.

The Union also liaised with other farming unions at the conference and attended the packed-out fringe event held by NFU at which Minister Zeichner was urged to make the strong case to Treasury for a budget that will see the Labour Party and the new UK Government deliver on its message that food security is national security, thereby backing British farming.
