Today, the National Farmers Union of Scotland hosts their first ever cross-union Next Generation Conference, bringing together young farmers, crofters, and agricultural professionals from across the sector for two days of learning, networking, and innovation.
The conference marks a milestone in NFUS’s commitment to developing Scotland’s next generation of agricultural leaders, fostering knowledge exchange, and showcasing opportunities across farming, crofting, and rural industries. Over the next two days, delegates explore policy updates, market opportunities, and practical farming innovations.
Day One: Policy, Branding, and Wellbeing
The opening day features expert-led sessions on the future of Scottish farming. Delegates hear the latest agricultural support updates from UK farming unions, followed by a session on promoting the Scottish brand. Industry leaders Sarah Millar (Quality Meat Scotland), Amanda Brown (Scotland Food & Drink), and Anthony Wills (Kilchoman Distillery) discuss how provenance, quality, and storytelling drive stronger market returns. The day also highlights mental health and wellbeing, with Clare Dickson from FarmStrong leading a session on resilience and support within farming communities.
Day Two: Innovation and Hands-On Learning
Tomorrow, delegates head out on farm and educational visits. At Easter Howgate, SRUC’s award-winning 'Green Farm' showcases climate-smart livestock systems and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At Pentland Science Park, SRUC Veterinary Services presents advanced diagnostic and laboratory services supporting animal health and productivity. Rotating workshops give attendees hands-on experience with cutting-edge research and its practical applications.
NFUS Next Generation Chair, Ben McClymont, said: "Our Next Generation Conference equips Scotland’s young farmers with the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to thrive. From market development to mental wellbeing and climate-smart farming, this event reflects our ongoing commitment to a profitable, sustainable, and resilient agricultural future."
NFUS Chief Executive John Davidson added: "This conference not only informs and inspires, it also strengthens the next generation’s voice within our industry. Investing in young people ensures that Scotland’s agricultural sector remains vibrant, innovative, and world-leading."
