NFUS Calls for Funding Support to Bridge Gap Between Statutory and Agricultural Sick Pay

NFUS is calling for an immediate support package to refund the difference between Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) and Agricultural Sick Pay (ASP) for workers absent due to COVID-19.   NFUS considers that such a measure will ensure that Scottish farming and crofting businesses are better equipped to provide support and security to their employees during this volatile and unprecedented time.

The minimum rate of sick pay an agricultural worker can receive in Scotland is set by the Agricultural Wages (Scotland) Order (No. 67) 2020.  For eligible workers working a 39-hour week, the minimum rate of ASP is £340.08 a week.  This minimum rate significantly exceeds the rate of SSP which is presently £95.85 a week.  This places agricultural businesses at a disadvantage to other sectors who are receiving sick pay support during the Covid pandemic.

NFUS is calling on support from the Scottish Government to extend the Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme to include ASP where applicable; ensuring Scottish agricultural businesses do not face additional financial pressure during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Andrew McCornick, President of NFUS, commented: “Food production is clearly an essential service and NFUS has been working closely with members to ensure that their businesses can stay in operation whilst operating safe social distancing practices.  Unfortunately, it will be the case that during this public health crisis, some workers may become unwell and have to take time off and employers want to do all that they can to support their employees at this time.  However, it is only fair that there is parity in the support measures in place across the economy. The minimum statutory standards for agricultural workers are greater than statutory standards for other workers and this should be recognised and included in support packages which provide rebates for sick pay.

“I have written to the Cabinet Secretary and the Agricultural Wages Board setting out our concerns and asking for a refund package to be considered.  Having spoken with MSPs about the issue, I am grateful for their support too.  NFUS would welcome an immediate support package to refund the difference between ASP and SSP that in turn ensures Scottish agriculture can focus on providing a secure and stable supply of food for the nation and continue to be an essential source of rural and island employment in these turbulent times.”
