Political Leaders Set Out Agricultural Priorities at Packed NFU Scotland Hustings Event

NFU Scotland, in partnership with the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC), brought together farmers, crofters and political representatives this evening for a well-attended National Hustings Event at Stirling Mart (United Auctions), placing agricultural policy and rural priorities firmly at the centre of the election debate.

With attendees from across NFU Scotland membership, SAYFC and the wider agricultural industry, the event provided a focused opportunity for discussion ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections on the future of Scottish agriculture, food production and rural communities.

Hosted by NFU Scotland President Andrew Connon, the hustings gave members the opportunity to hear directly from representatives and candidates from Scotland’s main political parties. Discussion throughout the evening reflected both the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, with strong engagement from established farmers and young people entering the industry. Key issues covered access to land, multi-year funding, profitability, food security,  practical learning, species management and next generation.

Speakers included:
Alistair Carmichael MP – Scottish Liberal Democrats
Jack McConnell – Scottish Labour
Jamie Halcro Johnston – Scottish Conservatives
Jim Fairley – SNP
Mags Hall – Scottish Greens
Richard Fairley – Reform UK

NFU Scotland President Andrew Connon said:

“It was excellent to see such a strong turnout and level of engagement from our members and young farmers. Events like this are essential in ensuring agricultural priorities are clearly heard by those seeking to represent us in Parliament. The quality of debate demonstrated just how important these issues are to rural Scotland.”

Fraser Graham, SAYFC, said: “It was really valuable to see so many young farmers and crofters engaging directly with political leaders. The decisions being made now will shape the future of our industry, and it’s vital that young people have the opportunity to question, challenge and be heard.”

The hustings marked a key moment in the election calendar for the agricultural sector - informing debate and ensuring farming issues remain firmly on the political agenda in the lead-up to the elections.
