Slam in the Scotch Lamb this Easter
NFU Scotland’s Easter Shelfwatch Bunny finds Morrison’s, Lidl and Aldi stocking only home-produced lamb
There is good news this Easter for those looking to feast on tasty, succulent Scottish lamb. NFU Scotland’s secret Easter bunny shopper hopped around a selection of supermarkets this morning (Friday, 25 March) on the hunt for Scottish and British lamb.
The good news is that for those who want to back our farmers this weekend, then the easiest places to pick up local lamb is Morrison’s, Aldi and Lidl. The lamb shelfwatch search found that these three are stocking nothing but British and Scottish lamb on their fresh meat aisles. That puts them at the top of the class for this ‘Eggs-cellent’ effort.
By comparison, the other retailers visited were found to be offering a mix of imported and domestic lamb.
Livestock Policy manager John Sleigh said: “Easter Sunday is fast approaching but there is still time to pick up your Scotch lamb. Our secret shopping shows that if you want to be sure you are supporting local farming then head to Morrison’s, Aldi or Lidl.
“While we didn’t get around all the local butchers, we know from past experience that the majority will also be backing local for their lamb offering this Easter. Many will even be able to tell you the farm where the lamb was reared.
“Lambing is underway across Scotland and many people are likely to be out and about in the beautiful Scottish countryside this weekend enjoying the sight of young lambs in the fields. “For those putting in the long hours on Scotland’s sheep farms, there would be no greater boost than for the Scottish public to sit down to tasty, succulent Scotch lamb this Easter. We ask them to back our farmers and buy local.”
