The Future for Agri-Renewables in the North East

Thainstone event on 3 March to discuss

The future of agri-renewables in the North East will be on the agenda when NFU Scotland hosts its first North East Renewables event of 2022 in the Glen Garioch room, Thainstone on Thursday, 3 March from 7pm until 9.30pm.

One of the speakers, NFU Scotland’s Climate Change Policy Manager, Kate Hopper explained: “I am really keen to meet our farmers in the North East and work with them to help shape policy and maximise opportunities for our members. Our expert speakers are covering a vast array of subject matters including policy direction; potential grant funding; farm scale solar; batteries, biomass and hydrogen.

“This meeting will, no doubt, also discuss established renewable energy streams such as wind, hydro and anaerobic digestion.  This should be a great event.”

Outgoing NFUS North East Renewables Co-ordinator, Davie Smith from Auchnagatt, explained: “We have a very valuable cast of expert speakers, and highly important discussion topics on our agenda.  We will share knowledge and ideas on the enormous opportunities which renewables can still offer farmers.”

Incoming North East Renewables Co-ordinators, Mark Hilton and Mark Davis both explained that they will take this opportunity to meet members and share their views on how NFUS will tackle renewables policy matters and share information going forward.

Mark said: “Mike and I both recognise that we have big boots to fill following Davie’s retirement from this important role. Between us both, we have varying and different renewable energy subject interest areas and will be able to offer our own experiences in these areas to help inform the membership.”

Mike voiced his enthusiasm for the post, adding: “There is desire to tackle lots of new challenges and opportunities which we as farmers can grasp here in the North East, especially in developing various on-farm renewable energy options which could serve to address climate change and improve our farm efficiency levels.”
