Union Strengthens its Livestock Team

NFU Scotland has strengthened its policy team with the appointment of Aberdeenshire farmer’s son, John Sleigh (27) to the position of Livestock Policy Manager.

The appointment of John, whose family farms at Newseat of Tolquhon, Tarves, will see current policy manager Penny Johnston focus on animal health and welfare issues for the Union.

As well as working on the family beef unit, John comes to NFUS with some parliamentary experience, having worked for Nicol Stephen MSP as a researcher.  John also helped to establish ‘Friends of Doonies’, a group set up to save the rare breeds community farm in Aberdeen.

Speaking on his appointment, John said:

“I hope to hit the ground running at NFUS as the list of challenges and issues for Scotland's livestock sector seems to grow year on year.  CAP Reform is the clearest example of the workload I face in the months ahead and I look forward to playing my part in ensuring we secure the right deal for Scotland’s crucial livestock sector from the negotiations.

“But when you look at the big picture, the other worries faced by those who keep beef or sheep are numerous – cross-compliance, ID and traceability, market returns and production costs.  I look forward to playing my part in ensuring Scotland’s livestock sector remains competitive and efficient.

NFUS Director of Policy and Regions, Jonnie Hall said:

“John is a fantastic addition to our staff body.  This is NFUS ‘beefing’ up the resources we have to handle the growing workload faced by those who represent our livestock sector in Scotland.  Having individual members of staff working together to cover all the core livestock issues and animal health and welfare matters will help deliver a stronger service to our many livestock members.”
