Scottish farmers and crofters encouraged to join events in Newbridge, Laurencekirk, and Ayrshire

NFU Scotland will be hosting six half day workshops this summer on agricultural vehicle legislation in conjunction with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Police Scotland.

The workshops will enable farmers and crofters to ensure that their agricultural vehicles are fit for purpose. Family members and employees are also welcome to join.

The events will cover licensing regulations, loaders, forks and other projections, load security, weights, coupling, brakes, lighting and markings, tyres, and general vehicle maintenance and road behaviours.

The workshops will be held on Wednesday 8 June in Newbridge, Tuesday 21 June in Laurencekirk, and Tuesday 5 July in Cumnock. There will be two sessions running each day with the choice of a morning (09.00 – 12.00) or afternoon session (13.00 – 16.00).

Speaking ahead of the events, NFU Scotland’s Transport Advisor Jamie Smart, said: “Farmers have to share public roads with other users, and it is important that they keep themselves up to date with the legislation. Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law. These events, run in conjunction with DVSA and Police Scotland, allow farmers to learn what they can and cannot do from those who enforce the rules. The events are run as practical workshops and will give those who attend a chance to ask questions as well as observe what is expected of them. A few hours spent at one of these events may just save you from fines, points, or even the loss of your licence.”
