Straw and feed buyers and those who grow for them are urged to plan ahead, look at alternatives and collaborate

The importance of planning ahead for straw and feed supplies by farmers and crofters is the focus of a new NFU Scotland campaign launched in July 2018.

The 12-week campaign encouraged both buyers and growers of straw and feed to think about what they need, not only in the short-term but further down the line to mitigate against any issues.

The campaign set out three key messages:

  • Plan ahead – know what you need; where you are getting it from; and if you’re a grower where your market is
  • Be flexible – look at your alternatives and have a back-up plan
  • Collaborate – speak to those around you and have a chat about any opportunities to reduce costs, such as joint buying or making farm-to-farm arrangements/deals

Facebook Live Questions with Ex- President Andrew McCornick - watch video here

On Friday 17 August 2018 Ex-President Andrew McCornick answered your questions in relation to planning ahead as part of our straw and feed campaign. As well as covering haulage to the western isles, straw prices and stakeholder engagement, Andrew also spoke about food prices, the impact of the weather, draff and what he has done to plan his business for the months and years ahead. AHDB - Checklist for making best use of limited straw stocks

Following on from the straw and feed summit organised by NFU Scotland with industry stakeholders on 1 August, AHDB has created a checklist for making best use of limited straw stocks as part as one of the action points from the meeting. The factsheet, available at https://ahdb.org.uk/knowledge-library/checklist-for-making-best-use-of-limited-straw-stocks explains the importance of assessing your straw needs and planning for any deficit.

Straw biosecurity

The exceptionally dry conditions this season have, inevitably, reduced forage and cereal straw production in traditional livestock areas. This has resulted in a larger than normal movements of straw from cereal growing areas in the south and east of England to the western and northern areas of the UK. In addition to the increased costs and logistical difficulties this causes, there is also the potential for this straw to spread weed seeds, with particular concern about black-grass. Guidance is available from AHDB for straw movements and information about black-grass at: http://cereals-blog.ahdb.org.uk/straw-movements-and-black-grass-what-you-need-to-know/
